I don't think the basics should be secret. Part of the fun of it is figuring out your interpretation of the character. Sometimes this means a little trial and error.
I am glad I have been playing with making these. I don't care for alot of other peoples hats (price and style).
Oh, the ears were borrowed from McCalls pattern M5956. On the hats, I stuffed the ears. On the cosplay, I used jewelery wire. Not sure which I prefer yet.
I can't wait to see the hats you'll make!
I may work on Derpy and Big Mac versions soon.

Oh thank you so much for these tips and patterns. I like that you aren't one of those people who zealously guards the patterns they use or- even worse- charges people for them. I'll probably make a ton of mistakes but I definitely look forward to making pony hats for my friends and myself!

No problem! I didn't excited at the slightest in sewing until I figured out how to apply it to ponies. I <3 ponies.
McCalls patterns are $.99 and Simplicty patterns are $1.99 3/15-3/18 at Hancock Fabrics. The same store often has fleece remnants for cheap.
